As Newport locals, we collectively find ourselves visiting our beaches more during the quiet, colder months than in the busy summer season. This year, we're making it a goal to spend more time enjoying the nature of Aquidneck Island. Here are a few spots that have been inspiring us during these shorter days:
Brenton Point Tower
This spot is a gem! Located in Brenton Point State Park, which sits on the grounds of a Gilded Age summer cottage, you’ll find remnants of the original structure as you explore the grounds. Our favorite part? An old tower you can climb that offers stunning views of Ocean Drive—it’s a true wow moment. Guilty of attempting to charm first dates at this spot while sipping hot cocoa from Springline Coffee, a Newport OUT partner and LGBTQ-owned business.
Easton's Beach, also known as First Beach
First Beach is sometimes too crowded in the summer, but winter walks here are a completely different experience—almost meditative. The beach stretches between Middletown’s charming homes and Newport’s grand mansions, offering serene views and plenty of space to reflect.
Cliff Walk, Starting at The Chanler
The paved start of the Cliff Walk makes it perfect for an easy stroll. With early sunsets around 4:30 PM, it’s a great spot for stargazing on chilly evenings—a new favorite adventure of ours this year.
Purgatory Chasm
Just a short walk from the parking lot, follow the trail to discover a secluded and jaw-dropping view of the chasm and Middletown’s Second Beach. There’s local lore about this spot being a popular cruising location for gay men in a more closeted era. True or not, the scenery is absolutely breathtaking and well worth a visit.
Battery Park
A true local favorite! The sunsets here are unbeatable, with views of the Newport Bridge and The Point neighborhood. It doesn’t get more quintessentially Newport than this. Just offshore, you’ll spot Rose Island, one of our Newport OUT partners. We’re counting down the days until the Jamestown Ferry reopens in May 2025 so we can visit again! Want to stay overnight on the island? Visit roseisland.org to learn more.
