Our Top December Activities in Newport

Updated: Dec 3

This holiday season, Newport has something for everyone! From drag dinners to oceanfront light displays, there’s so much to explore. We know the holidays can get a little chaotic, so we’ve put together a list of our six must-do activities this month.

  1. Rejects Drag Dinner

Drag Dinners at Rejects always brings laughter and community to what could otherwise be a cold winter night in Newport. Enjoy a lively evening of all-you-can-eat tacos and drag performances on Friday, December 20. Plus, $5 from each ticket supports Newport Pride, our local LGBTQ+ nonprofit. It’s a night of fun and inclusivity, perfect for the holidays! Learn more and grab your tickets HERE.

  1. Holiday Lights at the Breakers & Rough Point

The Sparkling Lights at The Breakers is a must-see, with its breathtaking glowing 500,000 sparkling light displays set against the backdrop of the historic Vanderbilt mansion. Don't forget to explore the mansion's opulent interior after soaking in the outdoor lights. Since tickets are timed and dated, securing them in advance at newportmansions.org is a smart move!

Afterward, heading to Rough Point adds a whimsical touch to your evening. Doris Duke’s estate is stunning, and seeing her famed camels is an unexpected delight! It’s a wonderful combination of holiday elegance and unique charm.

  1. Hot Cocoa at The Chanler

Warm up with The Chanler's signature hot cocoa topped with whipped cream, served in a stunning oceanfront setting that’s perfect for a cozy retreat. We especially love The Chanler for its recent rainbow cake explosion celebrating a beautiful gay wedding, showcasing their commitment to love and inclusivity. This welcoming spirit, paired with their indulgent treats, makes it a must-visit holiday spot.

  1. Winter Hikes at Miantonomi Park

Bundle up and explore Miantonomi Park! This hidden gem offers peaceful trails perfect for a brisk winter hike. You can expect panoramic views of Newport from the historic Miantonomi Tower. The crisp air and quiet beauty of the park make it an ideal spot for reflection and a deeper connection with nature during the holiday season. 1. Springline Peppermint Mocha

Bannister’s Wharf during the holidays feels like a scene straight out of a Hallmark movie, and no visit is complete without a stop at the LGBTQ+-owned Springline Coffee. Sip on their ultimate festive drink—a peppermint mocha—while shopping, strolling, and maybe even boozing! YUM - https://www.instagram.com/springline_coffee/reel/CzO1j2uRSao/

  1. Newport Pride Friday Social (and Bar 12)

LGBTQ+ gatherings are especially meaningful during the holiday season because chosen family is just as important as biological family. Bring your friends—or meet new ones—at the Newport Pride Last Friday Social on Friday, December 27. And as always, the night continues at Bar 12. Cheers to making memories that matter! We hope you have a very merry holiday season and make lasting memories in Newport!
